Chelydra serpentina

Nara spied this snappy visitor from our dining room window.  No wonder she was peering pointedly.  Because of my camera’s zoom function, I could photograph him or her from a safe distance.  Can you see the tail spikes?  God certainly created some strange-looking creatures!

I didn’t get close enough to measure the shell <grin>, but here is a wider view with our house in the background for size reference. A Google search on “snapping turtle” proffered this impressive webpage from the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology.  I’ve bookmarked the site for future reference in our zoology studies.

Our visitor continued on his/her way through our property without incidence.  We kept the dog and cat safely confined until Chelydra serpentina had moved on.
