Quilt Blocks

We’ve been studying the American pioneer movement of the mid-1800s.  Listed in our TruthQuest curriculum [visit blog review here] is the following book:

The Seasons Sewn: A Year in Patchwork

by Ann Whitford Paul

My students chose their favorite patchwork patterns.  [Astonishing that their favorites fell on adjacent pages!]  I asked them to reproduce those patterns on construction paper squares.

Corn and Beans

Artist: Circuit

Mariner’s Compass

Artist:  Button

Unbelievably complex are those quilt squares!  I can only imagine the hours and hours women labored over such quilts.  And stitched by hand!

We borrowed this interesting book from our local library.  Perhaps you can locate a copy at your community library?
