A Royal Guest

This Monarch spent several weeks as our guest.

Several weeks ago, Daddy noticed a Monarch caterpillar hanging in a J shape from a weed.  A household project required the removal of said weed.  Daddy and Button placed the caterpillar and weed in a butterfly habitat.  I regret that I didn’t photograph the Monarch during its metamorphosis.  I did, however, photograph the adult butterfly upon its emergence.

Our Monarch guest was flying about the habitat, but refused to leave while we watched.  Perhaps it was severely shy or its wings simply required more exercise before it migrated?  We had been concerned that our Michigan weather was turning too cold for the butterfly’s survival. The butterfly emerged during some relatively warmer days, so we’re hoping that it safely flew south.  When we next checked the habitat, there was no sign of the butterfly.

Oh–our royal guest reminded us of a fun book.  We borrowed it from the library for the umpteenth time:
